Several dozen workers out at the Oxy Chem plant in Ingleside were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after being exposed to some potentially dangerous vapors.
A Coast Guard spokesman told KRIS 6 News those vapors were detected by air quality monitors at the nearby Dupont plant
.
It is unclear how exactly the gas escaped, but officials believed it was coming from a ship operated by Uni-Gas that was picking up a load of
chemicals.
Several workers were taken to Spohn South Hospital, where a special containment area was set up.
However, all the workers were later released, and one of the Coast Guard responders told 6 News that no one had any adverse effects from the exposure.
"No one really experienced any symptoms," Travis Collier of the U.S. Coast Guard told 6 News. "None of the crew experienced any symptoms while we were onboard. We didn't. We've all been evaluated, and we're just waiting for the results."
"The
chemical exposure potentially is a dangerous exposure based on the concentration," Lyle Matthews of Christus Spohn South explained. "And at this point, their exposure was a minimal exposure, and what we were watching for was respiratory symptoms, and cardiac symptoms, making sure they they're going to be OK, and that's what we did."
