Surface dirt is actually made up of many fine layers of grease, oils, fats, bacteria, germs, dust mites and organic microorganisms. Many standard chemical cleaners break-down the visible layers of dirt giving the appearance of a clean surface. Chemical cleaners are a major contributor to dangerous indoor air pollution. Not only do they contain irritants and potential human carcinogens, but their fumes and tiny airborne particles are easily inhaled and may mix with other substances in the air to form even more deadly toxins.
Health Effects
There have been no adequate studies done to examine the long-term effects of chemical exposure in the home. What we do know is that many cleaning products contain VOC's (volatile organic compounds) which have been linked to respiratory problems, asthma attacks, eye, nose and throat irritation as well as numerous other health problems. Many VOC's are in fact, believed to be human carcinogens. At the very least, chemical cleaning products have an effect on your skin causing redness, irritation, swelling and dryness.
Fragrances; What Are they Hiding?
Scents are often added to products to mask the odor of other chemical additives. These scents are generally lab-made with synthetic compounds derived from petroleum, benzene, aldehydes and many other known toxins capable of causing cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.
